Duchess Says and Red Mass: Fire Baptized Species / Red Mass

Wow! Our first 7” release! We hope that you are as excited as we are. This release pairs two like-minded bands that compliment each other and pair perfectly on this split release.

Back in 2008 we released the long awaited debut by Duchess Says, Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs, and while they are getting set to begin working on their sophomore effort, this will be the first new music available from the band in quite some time. For their side of the single Duchess Says have taken a step back from the electro-punk sound of their debut and shoot for a much more straight-ahead post-punk / no wave approach that nods in the direction of the segment of those movements that was based out NYC in the early 80’s. The track, Fire Baptized Species, has become one crowd pleasers of the band’s live set and also features the guest vocals of Roy Vucino of Red Mass. At times the vocals and guitar frenzy recall a more playful sounding Dead Kennedys; in other words it’s super energetic.

Red Mass is a relatively new band assembled from the ashes of CPC Gangbangs, and also including members of lesser-known bands such as Black Feelings, Chocolat, Demon’s Claws, Ghost Limbs and the Hot Springs. Currently they have a self titled 12” EP released by Psychic Handshake records as well as a ton of material listed as forthcoming. Back in the summer of 2007, we released the vinyl version of CPC’s debut, Mutilation Nation, and while it was a serious bummer seeing this great band fade into memory, the arrival of Red Mass has made the loss easier to accept. For the Red Mass side of the split they have turned in a track that is a little less straight-ahead than the Duchess Says cut and points in the direction of blown out stoner rock vibes of vintage-era Monster Magnet. This track serves as the bands introductory anthem as it welcomes all new followers into the collective mindset of the Red Mass. For the last few years, Vucino has helped to give Montreal’s flourishing garage and rock n’ roll scene international recognition. Having fronted CPC Gangbangs, he now also records and tours with Mark Sultan.
